Finasteride tablets are used to treat hair loss in men (androgenetic alopecia) by improving hair growth and density. In male-pattern hair loss, the hormone DHT (dihydrotestosterone) shortens and thins hair, eventually halting growth. Finasteride works by inhibiting the enzyme 5α-reductase, which converts testosterone into DHT, thereby lowering DHT levels, which helps promote hair growth. Finasteride belongs to the class of medicines known as 5α-reductase inhibitors.
