Ferriprox® (deferiprone)
for Sickle Cell DIsease
Ferriprox (deferiprone) is used to treat iron overload caused by blood transfusions in people with thalassemia or sickle cell disease. Repeated transfusions can lead to excess iron, which Ferriprox helps remove by binding to the iron and allowing it to be excreted through urine. This is important because high iron levels can cause serious health problems like heart failure, liver disease, and diabetes. Ferriprox is used when other iron-removal medications are ineffective or difficult to take.
