Topical minoxidil is used to promote hair regrowth on the scalp. It is believed to work by improving blood flow to hair follicles, extending the growth (anagen) phase, and shortening the shedding (telogen) phase. Though not fully understood, its mechanism may involve activating ERK and Akt pathways and preventing follicle cell death by increasing the BCl-2/Bax protein ratio.
