Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ALS, Lou Gehrig's Disease

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive nervous system disease that damages nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, leading to muscle control loss. Often called Lou Gehrig's disease, ALS typically starts with muscle twitching, weakness in the limbs, difficulty swallowing, or slurred speech. Over time, it impairs the muscles needed for movement, speech, eating, and breathing. The exact cause is unknown, though a small number of cases are inherited. ALS has no cure and is fatal.
