A gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST) is a type of cancer that originates in the digestive system, most commonly in the stomach and small intestine. GISTs are believed to develop from nerve cells in the digestive organ walls, which help move food through the body. While small GISTs may not cause symptoms and can grow slowly, larger ones may lead to abdominal pain and nausea. GISTs can occur at any age but are more common in adults and rare in children. The cause is often unknown.
