Ovarian cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the ovaries or fallopian tubes, where abnormal cells grow uncontrollably. These rapidly multiplying cells can invade and damage healthy tissue. The ovaries, located on either side of the uterus, are responsible for producing eggs and the hormones estrogen and progesterone. Ovarian cancer is more common in Native American and white women. Additionally, individuals of Ashkenazi Jewish descent are at higher risk due to a higher prevalence of BRCA gene mutations.
