Spinal Muscular Atrophy SMA
Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a group of inherited neuromuscular disorders that cause muscle weakness and atrophy. It occurs due to the loss of lower motor neurons in the spinal cord, which control muscle movement. Without these neurons, muscles cannot receive the signals needed for movement. The weakness primarily affects the muscles closer to the body’s center (proximal muscles) and tends to worsen over time.
