Mirena® (levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system)
for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding
Mirena (levonorgestrel) is a hormonal intrauterine device (IUD) used for pregnancy prevention and to treat heavy menstrual bleeding. It is a small, T-shaped device placed in the uterus that slowly releases levonorgestrel. Mirena prevents pregnancy by thickening cervical mucus, thinning the uterine lining, and inhibiting sperm movement. It reduces heavy periods by regulating growth of the uterine lining, leading to less monthly bleeding.
