Nexplanon (etonogestrel implant) is a long-term, reversible birth control option for women. It consists of a small, flexible rod about the size of a matchstick, which is inserted under the skin of the upper arm by a healthcare provider. The implant releases etonogestrel, a hormone that prevents pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the uterine lining. It provides effective contraception for up to 3 years.
