Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir/ritonavir) is an antiviral treatment for COVID-19 that reduces the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, or death. It is FDA-approved for high-risk adults with mild-to-moderate COVID-19 and has Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for high-risk patients aged 12 to 18. Nirmatrelvir blocks a key viral enzyme to stop the virus from replicating, while ritonavir helps maintain nirmatrelvir’s effectiveness by keeping it in the body longer.
