Procrit (epoetin alfa) is a medication used to treat anemia (low red blood cell count) in individuals with chronic kidney disease, those receiving zidovudine for HIV, and cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. It can also reduce the need for blood transfusions in anemic patients before high-risk surgeries. Epoetin alfa works by stimulating the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells, mimicking the natural hormone erythropoietin that helps prevent anemia.
