Xifaxan® (rifaximin)
for Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Xifaxan (rifaximin) is used to treat travelers’ diarrhea (TD), irritable bowel syndrome with diarrhea (IBS-D), and to reduce the risk of hepatic encephalopathy (brain disorder linked to liver disease). It works by killing specific bacteria, blocking proteins they need to grow. However, bacterial resistance in some regions can reduce its effectiveness against travelers’ diarrhea.
